MEHERPUR, Dec 24: This 2024-25 Rabi Season, a total of 1, 10,022 metric tons (mt) of vegetable production worth about Tk 500 crore is likely to be produced in the district known for vegetables.

Despite some crop yield failure in early varieties of vegetables, a bumper  yielding of the vegetable has been possible.

All types of vegetables are going to different parts of the country, playing a vital role in meeting the vegetable needs of the country.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), vegetables have been cultivated on 4,970 ha of land in Meherpur.

Cauliflower has been cultivated on 1,145 ha, eggplant in 1,236 ha, cabbage on 174 ha, brinjal on 347 ha, red cabbage on 253 ha,  sweet pumpkin on 243 ha,  bean on  517 ha, collard greens on 222 ha, and tomato on 59 ha. There are also broccoli, squash, radish, cucumber, carrot, and bitter gourd farms.

Deputy Assistant Agricultural Officer in the DAE Sumi Khatun said, the cultivation of all types of vegetables has increased, compared to the last season.

Growers are also getting good prices. Eggplant and cauliflower have the potential to bring in Tk 200 crore for growers.

Most vegetables are cultivated in villages of South Sholmari, Shuvrajpur, Kathuli, Saharbati, Tandetulbaria.

Growers said, it is possible to produce vegetables three times in a year. It is possible to earn Tk 8-10 lakh per bigha yearly.

Yet, a large part of the profit goes to brokers. If farmers can market directly, they will get much profits.

Raihan Uddin Sentu, a vegetable supplier, said, every day, nearly 20 trucks are filled with vegetables from Sadar Upazila alone and taken to different districts of the country; several hundred tonnes of vegetables are sold in the wholesale market.
Wholesaler Matin said, prices of vegetables are good.

Bijoy Krishna Halder, deputy director of the DAE-Meherpur, said, Meherpur is a very prosperous district in agriculture; its soil is suitable for production of almost all types of vegetables, rice, jute, and banana.

DAE will try to ensure that this trend continues in the future, he added.
