Taslima Begum is deeply shocked and facing an uncertain future as her husband CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Md Jamal Uddin embraced martyrdom when bullets pierced his body during a peaceful demonstration of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Severe financial hardship engulfed the life of Taslima after she lost her husband Jamal, who was shot dead by police in the morning on August 5 at Hathazari Bus Station.

She is struggling to maintain her daily life serving as a maid in the houses of her neighbours after the incident.

Jamal Uddin Mollah, 54, the younger son of late Saleh Ahmed of Oxygen Kulgaon area of Jalalabad Ward No. 2 of Chattogram City, had been living in Hathazari Fire Centre, Haziratoli area for more than 10 years.

He was spending his days happily with his wife Taslima Begum, 48, a daughter Tania Akhtar Rumi,18, and a son Al Amin,14. He used to drive CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Oxyzen-Hathazari route.

When Jamal was witnessing the long-march of the student movement towards Chattogram at Hathazari bus stand area on August 5, police's bullets hit him around 11 am.

Hundreds of students and people took possession at the bus stand area of Hathazari road like in other parts of the country, demanding the fall of autocratic Sheikh Hasina on August 5.

Police fired tear gas canisters and bullets to disperse the crowd. At that time, Jamal Uddin, a pedestrian, fell to the ground after being shot in the hand and chest. Local people took him to the Hathazari Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9 pm on August 5.

The following day, he was buried at his family graveyard in his native village at Oxygen Kulgaon area on August 6.

Jamal Uddin's wife Taslima Begum said, "My daughter is mentally-challenged. I was returning home with my husband and a neighbour after seeing a groom for my daughter in the Hathazari Abbas Pool area on August 5. When I reached the Hathazari bus stand area, my husband said to me, "You go home, I am coming.' I went home with a neighbouring woman. As soon as I reached my residence, I received news that my husband is seriously injured. People from the area came to my residence and started gathering. The matter seemed strange to me. I could not believe them at all. I immediately rushed to the hospital. When I went there, I saw blood flowing from my husband's body like flood. With the help of people from the area, we took him from Hathazari Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 9 pm on August 5.

Talking to BSS, Taslima said in a tearful voice that her husband used to maintain their family with the money he earned by running a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.

"Even though the family was poor, he never left the needs of his children unfulfilled. Now how will I run the family comprising my daughter and son after my husband's death?" she said.

"My only son Alamin works at a CNG refuelling station at Hathazari Bus Station area, but his earning is not enough to maintain my three-member family. I also work as a maid in the houses of people around. But all the money gets finished just to pay the house-rent. Running the family has become difficult. Now I see darkness after losing the only bread-earner of my family. If the government arranges money for my daughter's wedding expenses and a job for my son, then my suffering will ease," Taslima said.

She also said that it would be helpful for them if the government provides them with financial assistance.

Her daughter Tania Akhtar Rumi, remembering her father, said, "I was my father's very beloved child. My father loved me most.

He never ate rice without me. Everyday, he would sit me next to him while taking meals, and he would feed me too."
She demanded punishment of the killers of her father.

Neighbours said that Jamal Uddin was a very simple-minded person. He never quarrelled with anyone in the area. When he stayed home, he would play with the small children of the area all day long. Now his wife and children are living a sub-human life.

If the government stands by them, the family will be able to function well.

Talking to BSS Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer ABM Mashiuzzaman said, "The family is very helpless. The upazila administration has already provided financial assistance. Various social and voluntary organizations have been asked to stand by the family."     —BSS
