BD, India shine as Japanese apparel imports grow steadily

Japan's apparel imports continued their upward trajectory in October 2024 with 0.84 per cent increase in values and 3.47 per cent in weights as compared to previous month. 

According to official figures released by Japanese customs, the apparel import value amounted to US $ 2.28 billion in October, reports Apparel Resources, a business of fashion media house that provides latest news and insights into the apparel, fashion and textile industry.

Bangladesh, India and Vietnam grew in their respective shipment to Japan both in weights and values, while China declined in value terms and Indonesia's exports tumbled both in weights and values.

As per an analysis by team Apparel Resources, China, despite a fall of 2.60 per cent in values, contributed half of the apparels imported by Japan in October '24, amounting US $ 1.11 billion. On the other hand, weight-wise shipment from China to Japan upped 0.51 per cent to 349.87 million kilograms.

Vietnam secured the second spot after China, achieving apparel exports worth US $ 395 million, reflecting a 5.18 per cent year-on-year growth. The shipment volume reached 68.40 million kilograms, marking a notable 15 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Bangladesh and India also noted significant growth in their respective apparel exports to Japan during October '24. While India showcased higher growth in shipment volumes, Bangladesh maintained its consistency in overall export value and volume.

Bangladesh recorded stronger performance, with export values reaching US $ 143.55 million, up 18.56 per cent year-on-year. The shipment weights also increased to 28.54 million kilograms, registering an 8.09 per cent yearly growth in October 2024.

India exported apparel worth US $ 12.32 million to Japan, growing by 8.97 per cent. Notably, the shipment volume surged by an impressive 39 per cent to 3.67 million kilograms, indicating a growing demand in Japan for Made in India apparels.
