Ex-DG BGB Lt Gen Mainul, wife held at Dhaka airport

 
Former director general of the Bangladesh Rifles and later the Border Guard Bangladesh, Lt Gen (Retd) Md Mainul Islam, has been detained along with his wife at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to travel abroad.

The Immigration Police detained them on Tuesday afternoon as they were preparing to travel to the United States. An official from the Immigration Police confirmed the matter. 
Mainul served as director general of then-BDR from February 28, 2009, to May 9, 2010. He assumed the position after Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, who was killed during the 2009 BDR mutiny.

Currently, he holds the position of vice president of the Bangladesh Olympic Association. Notably, Mainul is the brother of former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam.
