If better treatment is not ensured, Mehedi may lose eyesight

CUMILLA, Dec 25: On July 17, Mehidi Hasan Shuvo, a student of Cumilla Polytechnic Institute, was injured in police firing in the Kotbari area of Cumilla during the anti-discrimination student movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. 
 
He still is carrying fifty sprinters of shrapnel in various parts of his body, including his head, chest, and two eyes.  After his severe injuries, Mehedi faces vision problems.   

In the past three months, several operations were performed for full recovery of Mehedi.  After series of operations, he still faces vision problems.  

His eyesight problem is gradually getting worse as he could not get better treatment due to severe financial hardship.

He got financial assistances from his friends but this is not enough to bear the treatment costs of Mehedi.  

In order to bear treatment costs, Mehidi's father had to sell the auto rickshaw, which was his main source of income.

Mehedi demanded he wants government assistance for cause of eye treatment for getting full recovery.

He is second among the four children of Liton Miah, a resident of Palpara village in Belghar North union of Lalmai upazila in Cumilla.

Among the four children of Liton Mia, Mehedi is only son and other three is daughters.
His mother is a homemaker (38).

Mehedi also said at present, he is taking treatment under a specialist doctor at a private hospital in Dhaka. He has to come Dhaka for treatment purposes almost twice in a week.

His HSC exam is knocking the door but still his vision is not clear. Even he cannot read the book clearly.

It is difficult for his family to bear treatment coast.   

Mehedi's father Liton Miah said, "For the sake of Mehidi's treatment I have already sold my auto-rickshaw, only medium of my earnings. The first few days of treatment are going on with the money from the auto rickshaw sale."

After finishing all money of the sold auto-rickshaw,  I have to depend on other for continuing treatment costs.

Liton Mia is going through huge financial crisis to meet daily needs of his family alongside bearing treatment costs.

Liton Miah also said, "At the beginning, we received a certain amount of financial help from the students of polytechnic students and other people. Now my family is confined with the cycle of extreme financial hardship"   

He urged the government and affluent sections of people to extent their helping hands for bearing treatment costs of mehedi. 
 
Regarding Mehidi's treatment Liton Miah told that, they took him to different hospitals for a proper treatment. Finally he is now under the supervision of Dr. Siddiqur Rahman an eye specialist of Vision Eye Hospital, green road.  

Quoting the doctor, Liton Miah said there is no possibility that Mehidi will regain his previous vision.

"The right eye may be damaged completely. Left eye may face similar condition, if proper treatments are ensured," he said.
Mehidi's uncle Hayatunnabi shared that from childhood Mehidi is a bright student .He passed SSC obtaining GPA-5.00.    —BSS

Despite all the struggles, Liton Miah had a big dream about his son Mehidi's education.  But irony of fate, Mehedi is losing eyesight as he joined the anti-discriminations student movement.  
 
Dream of Mehedi's family is fading as they are gripped by fear of future of Mehedi.  
  
Brave participation of many youths like Mehedi sparked the anti-discrimination student movement in all corners of country uniting all levels of people to make Bangladesh free from deep rooted fascism, said Abu Raihan, convener of the Cumilla city  committee of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement.
