A court in Kushtia has sent former superintendent of police (SP) Tanveer Arafat to jail in a case filed over the killing of BNP activist Sujon Malitha in 2019.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahmuda Khatun passed the order Thursday after Tanveer was produced before the court.

Earlier, on Wednesday evening, he was taken under police custody. He was serving as deputy police commissioner attached to the DIG Office of the Sylhet Range at the time of arrest.

Shihabur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kushtia Model Police Station, said that a case was filed with the police station on September 29 over the murder of Sujon Malitha against 15 named and 10 to 12 unnamed people. SP Tanveer is the prime accused in the case.

According to the case statement, on September 13, 2019, the accused entered the house Sujon Malitha after he returned home at around 12:20AM from a BNP programme in Kushtia town.

The accused forcibly abducted Sujon Malitha, and took him to an unknown location. It was learnt that Sujon had been shot to death in the same night near the GK (Ganges-Kobadak) canal in Mollateghoria area, on the outskirts of Kushtia town.

According to the complainant, victim’s family had attempted to file a case multiple times, but the accused intimidated them in various ways. The plaintiff Sujon Hossain, who identified himself as a ‘political friend’ of slain Sujon Malitha, also claimed that many locals are aware of the incident.

Meanwhile, there are some allegations against the Taneer that during the July-August mass uprising, he carried out attacks on journalists. He was the deputy commissioner of traffic division of Barishal Metropolitan Police during that time.
