7-member body formed to probe  Secretariat fire

Report in seven days

To investigate the fire incident that broke out in Building No. 7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka on early Thursday, the Cabinet Division formed a seven-member high-powered committee.

The committee, headed by Mohammad Khaled Rahim, Additional Secretary (district administration) of the Cabinet Division, has been asked to find out the cause of the fire, assess the damage and recommend measures to prevent recurrence of such fire, according to an office order of the Cabinet Division.

After Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury  inspected the fire spot, the probe body was formed. 
The probe body began working to find out the reasons of the fire.

Present, among others at the spot were  Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and Special Assistant to the Chief 
Adviser Md Khoda Baksh Chowdhury.

The committee has been asked to submit its report in seven working days, with its  findings and recommendations to prevent recurrence of such fire.

The committee members include a representative (not below the rank of joint secretary) each from Public Security Division, Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, Local Government Division, and a representative of the Housing and Public Works Ministry, who will serve as the Member-Secretary.

Two other members are representatives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense.
The committee has been authorised to  include more members, if necessary.

The committee will also examine whether any individuals bear personal or professional responsibility for the incident.
The fire, which broke out on the fifth floor of the Secretariat's Building No. 7 at around 1:52am, was completely doused after 10 hours by 19 units of the fire service and the forces of Bangladesh Police, Army, Navy, Ansar and other authorities concerned.

While briefing after inspecting the fire spot on Thursday, Home Adviser Janagir Alam said that the fire started at fifth floor of the building and gradually spread  upwards. The fire caused at 1.50am on Thursday and the fire service was informed at 1.52am. It started dousing the fire at 1.54am. The fire was controlled by 8.05am.

In response to a query about the reasons, the adviser said, "We will find out the cause by holding thorough investigation. Regarding the death of Fire Man Sohanuzzaman Nayan, the adviser said that while trying to cross the road with water pipe, a truck crushed him to death. It is unfortunate. Actions would be taken against the truck driver.
He condoled on the death of the fire fighter.
