The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Thursday constituted a five-member committee to evaluate the extent of damage caused by a fire in Building 7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Ministry on Thursday issued an order forming the committee led by Md Abdus Samad Al Azad, Joint Secretary of the

Administration Division of the Ministry.

Its members include Deputy Secretary Mohammad Saidur Rahman, System Analyst Sukant Basak, and Assistant Maintenance Engineer ASM Mehrab Hossain, with Deputy Secretary Md Kamal Hossain serving as the member secretary.

The committee has been tasked with assessing the damage to Ministry resources including furniture, electronics and other assets caused by the fire.

It has also been instructed to propose specific recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future.

The committee may co-opt additional members if necessary and is required to submit a report to the Ministry Secretary within seven working days.

"This directive, issued with the approval of the appropriate authority, comes into immediate effect," the Ministry order stated.

The fire broke out at early 1:52am on Thursday in Building 7 of the Secretariat. The fifth to eighth floors were severely affected. The fire was contained after six and a half hours, with the efforts of 19 units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence.

The cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage have not yet been determined.
