Expressing deep concern over the fire incident that broke out in the Bangladesh Secretariat building early on Thursday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has demanded a thorough investigation into the blaze to identify the real culprits.
The fire, which broke on the fifth floor of the Secretariat Building 7 around 1:52am, was completely extinguished after 10 hours of firefighting efforts, leaving one person dead.
The fire severely damaged four floors of Building 7, from the fifth to the eighth, which housed multiple offices of the key ministries and divisions like Road Transport and Highways Division, Local Government and Rural Development Ministry, Labour and Employment Ministry, Post and Telecommunication Division, Youth and Sports Ministry, Finance Division, and Public Administration Ministry.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the BNP leader said, "The devastating fire at the Secretariat has caused significant damages, with important documents reduced to ashes. It is not unusual that the current interim government finds itself in an embarrassing situation after such an incident."
"I strongly demand that the real culprits be identified and punished through a proper investigation into the fire incident," he added.
Mirza Fakhrul also called upon the government to provide appropriate compensation to the family of the fire victim and those injured in the incident.
