KISHOREGANJ, Dec 27: This 2024-25 season, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken a massive programme to cultivate Boro paddy in 13 upazilas of the district.
According to DAE sources, a total of 1,68,100 hectares (ha) of land will be brought under the Boro cultivation in the district, with a production target of 7,82,320 tonnes (mt)of rice.
Of the total, 55,600 ha will be brought under hybrid variety, 1,12,210 ha under high-yielding variety and 290 ha under local variety.
DAE's Additional Deputy Director Abul Kalam Azad said, there is no shortage of Boro saplings in the district. The plantation of the saplings will continue up to 3rd week of February, he added.
The haors (water bodies) having about one lakh ha of cultivable land are in four upazilas of the district- Itna, Mithamoin, Austagram and Nikli. The land of Itna is 27,400 ha, Mithamoin 15,690 ha, Austagram 24,170 ha, and Nikli 14,380 ha.
Other lands included 8,130 ha in Hossainpur, 9,150 ha in Kishoreganj Sadar, 10,235 ha in Pakundia, 12,835 ha in Katiadi, 8,850 ha in Karimganj, 10,330 ha in Tarail, 12,455 ha in Bajitpur, 6,6565 ha in Kuliarchar, and 6,910 ha in Bhairab Upazila.
Several farmers in haor areas said, this year high yielding and hybrid species are cultivated mostly.
Authorities concerned have taken adequate steps for ensuring smooth supply of chemical fertiliser, pesticide, technical assistance and other inputs to Boro growers, while commercial banks, other financial institutions and NGOs provided agriculture loans with easy terms.
