SIRAJGANJ, Dec 27: The Baghabari Port in Baghabari Upazila of the district has turned lifeless as no vessel is coming to the port because of work abstention by the transport workers.

Water transport workers on Thursday announced indefinite strike from Friday midnight, demanding arrest of the culprits involved in brutal killing of seven crewmen of a lighter vessel on Monday.

Seven workers of lighter vessel MV Al Bakhera carrying 720 tonnes of urea from Chattogram to Baghabari met a tragic end early Monday. It was anchored near Harina Ferry Ghat in Chandpur.

Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation also demanded of the authorities to ensure workers' safety and security on the routes from Kutubdia to Chandpur.

They demanded compensation of Tk 20 lakh for each family of victims.

Due to the work abstention, the port has turned lifeless; supplies of fuel, fertiliser and other goods to 16 districts in northern region of the country have also been stopped.

Water transport workers said, until their demand is met, the work abstention will continue.

Vice-President of Bangladesh Water Transport workers Federation Abdul Wahab Mia said, "Seven crews were killed brutally. We are in security concern. Our programme will continue until the demand is met."

President of Baghabari Launch workers Association Abu Dawd Master said, it is not possible to operate a vessel alone; so, the statement of the arrested person is not true; it is a prelude killing having other men behind; that is why it needs proper investigation to identify the real men.

A worker at the port Dulal Hossain said, no vessel is coming because of the work abstention. "No work at the port. So, 700 workers have no job; if this continues, we will have to fall in serious crisis."

Deputy Director of BIWTA Asaduzzaman at the port said, "The port has been lifeless mostly due to the work abstention. I have informed the matter to the authorities concern. According to their decision, measures will be taken."
