A grieving father in Magura's Mohammadpur upazila has passed away just five days after his son was killed in a brutal killing aboard a cargo vessel on the Meghna River at Haimechar in Chandpur.
The father, Daud Molla, 65, succumbed to his grief following the death of his son, Sajibul Islam, 22, a young seaman from Polashbari village in the upazila.
Sajibul was one of seven victims killed in a the brutal killing that occurred last Monday aboard the MV Al-Bakhera while it was anchored near the Ishanbala canal the area. Family members revealed that the devastating news left Daud inconsolable. Already suffering from chronic respiratory problems and other health issues, Daud's condition worsened as he struggled to cope with the loss.
On Thursday evening, the father's health deteriorated significantly and he was rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Despite medical intervention, he passed away later that night. He was laid to rest on Friday morning in the family graveyard.
Sajibul had been working in maritime roles for five years and had recently taken an examination for a promotion. While waiting for the results, he took a temporary job as a greaser on the MV Al-Bakhera to avoid idleness. He had been married only five months before the tragedy struck.
The MV Al-Bakhera incident left seven individuals dead, five of whom were found dead at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being transported to the hospital. A severely injured survivor is currently undergoing treatment. The victims were discovered on Monday morning when police boarded the vessel which had been anchored in the Meghna River.
Among the victims was another young man from Magura, Majidul Islam, 16, a ninth-grade student who had taken a temporary job on the boat during his school vacation.
