Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said the bus, which rammed three vehicles at the toll plaza of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway on Friday, had brake issues.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Taposh Karmakar, also media officer of the RAB-10 said that during the primary interrogation, the driver of the bus, Mohammad Nur Uddin, 26, claimed that bus had been out of order for a long time and it was put into service on Friday after repairs.
The RAB official said the driver realized the brakes were faulty right from the start and informed the owner, who advised him to drive the vehicle slowly. The driver claimed to have tried applying the brakes of the bus multiple times during the accident but was unable to stop it.
RAB official also said that the bus driver did not have a valid license renewal and had a history of substance abuse. The driver admitted that he consumes hemp, but he was not intoxicated while driving the bus on Friday moring.
RAB detained the bus driver from Siddhirganj, Narayanganj on Friday night.
Earlier, on December 27, a bus of Bepari Paribahan’ rammed into three other vehicles parked at the toll plaza of Dhaka-Mawa Expressway in South Keraniganj, killing six people, including four of a family.
Police had seized the bus after the accident, but the staffers managed to escape.
