Markhali River in death throes for garbage, pollution

SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, Dec 28:  The Markhali River, a branch of the Brahmmaputra River, in Sonargaon Upazila of the district is at dying stage due to garbage and pollution.

The river has been in its existence crisis, with its navigability hampered. Once there would be launch moving in the river to Meghalaya.    
 
Locals said, they would cultivate crops by irrigating water of the river; but now the polluted water is no longer coming any help to their cropping.

The river has been in the grip of local influential people. Both banks have been grabbed by raising installations, such as shops and living houses. 

Locals and pedestrians complained, foul smells from garbage heapare affecting them. 
 
Authorities of Environment Protection and Development Society submitted a memorandum to the Environment Department-Narayanganj, Deputy Commissioner Office, local administrative office and other related departments in order to protect the environment.  

Starting from along the Meghna River bank at Boidderbazar Union flowing via Sonargaon Municipality, Pirojpur, Shambupura, and Mograpara Union's historic Kaikerteker Haat , the Marikhali River has met with the Brahmmaputra River.   

Now thousands of people in the municipality and four unions can't use the river water in agriculture and household works.  
Locals said, centring the river, 30 villages grew up with at least 50,000 people in the upazila.  

Businessmen of Mograpara Chourasta Bazar Motaleb, Kamal Hossain, Ramjan Hasan, and Billal Hossain said, "We can't stay in the area because of bad smell of Marikhali water. We draw attention of the authorities including the upazila administration in this regard so that we can get rid of such suffering."        

Chairman of the Environment Protection and Development Society Mohammad Hossain said, the Marikhali River has turned a Morakhal (dead canal) because of daily dumping of garbage by factories, haats and bazars.

Applications have been sent to the authorities for digging the river to bring back the navigability, he added.  
 
He further said, as part of public awareness signboard and banner festoon have been hanged beside the garbage heap.
 
Sonargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer Farzana Rahman said, very soon necessary measures will be taken to free the Marikhali River from grabbing and pollution.
