RAJSHAHI, Dec 28: Rajshahi University (RU) Medical Centre has been failing to provide necessary healthcare services to residential students, teachers and other staff-members due to lack  of its capacity.

According to the university sources, more than 50,000 students, teachers, officials and employees of RU are suffering poor treatment.

After five years of establishing the RU, the medical centre was launched in 1958.
On November 24, 2024, the afternoon shift of the centre was suspended in the name of manpower crisis; and in this connection a notice was issued by the centre authorities.

An investigation founds 36 physician posts at the RU Medical Centre in order to ensure healthcare services; but, only 14 physicians are working; most of the 22 posts are vacant; and two nurses are working against granted six.

Technicians are not adequate to operate rich quality medical tools. At present, working physicians are facing embarrassing situation while providing treatment to huge number of students and teachers.

According to the RU sources, on October 24 in 2020, a circular was issued for appointing 13 physicians against 18 vacant posts. But the process is pending as the viva-exam was not held.

After fall of the Awami League government, four physicians resigned. Now the vacant posts stand at 22.
There are three emergency medical officers against six posts in the centre. There are not physicians in ENT, Skin, psychology and gynaecology departments.

A visit found absences of microbiologist, bed and adequate oxygen in the centre. The ECG machine is inoperative in the absence of specialist. Due to lack of full time technologist Digital X-Ray machine is lying useless.

Yearly, a student gives a fee of Tk 100 to the university for health tests while students stand at 38,000.
Student Atikur Rahman of Law Department said, "If we go to the medical centre with any disease symptom, we don't get right treatment because of physician crisis. Besides, it needs hour after hour for getting service."

Nurunnahar Tonni of the History Department said, "Only primary treatment is provided in our medical centre. If there is other disease than sneezing-coughing, we are referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in the name of crises of physicians and machineries. Again, in the case of medicines, low quality medicines are given."

Medical Centre authorities said, three drafts of budget are struck up with the university administration. So, due to adequate budget, they can't provide necessary facilities including medicines.

Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Centre Mafruha Siddiqa Lipi said, "Since the opening of the medical centre, manpower has been a big barrier. Whenever we went to the university administration, they just gave us assurance. Now, we can run the morning shift somehow only by the existing physicians. It is not possible to run the afternoon shift (4-8pm). Unless necessary manpower has been appointed in the centre, we can't provide adequate healthcare."

RU VC Saleh Hasam Nakib said, "Since I took the administrative responsibility, I held many meetings about the Medical Centre. We are working to solve the complication about the long physician crisis."

"In fact, the manpower crisis is the main in the medical centre; there are allegations about irregular use of medical tools, and providing medicines to students. We are trying rapidly to solve these. On an emergency basis, we have appointed one eye specialist; other things are under process," he added.

He further said, as there is a matter of cross-checking in appointing, for transparency, it is being delayed a bit.
The VC focussed on the struck up budget for medicines in the centre, and said, the matter of financial adjustment is seen by the department concerned; it was supposed to be solved.

He expressed the hope of solving all these problems in the medical centre in the beginning of next January.
