GOPALGANJ, Dec 28: Farmers are benefitting from commercial farming of BINA-22 paddy in the district. BINA-22 is an advance and high-yielding species.
Its yielding per bigha stands at 20-22 maunds. The per bigha cultivation cost is Tk 10,000 while the paddy sale per bigha stands at Tk 24,000-26,400. And the profit stands at Tk 14,000-16,400 per bigha.
The BINA-22 cultivation is increasing in Gopalganj as farmers are getting profitable sales.
This information was confirmed by Dr Md Kamruzzaman, acting and scientific officer of BINA Sub-Centre in Gopalganj.
This Aman Season, BINA-22 has been cultivated on 25 exhibition plots in the district. Besides, the paddy has been farmed on at least 25 hectares of land.
BINA-22 can be harvested within 112-115 days. Later on, these lands can be used for red gram pulse and mustard.
A farmer of Maheshpur Village in Kashiani Upazila Hasan Mridha said, "According to the advice of scientists of the BINA Gopalganj Sub-Centre, I cultivated BINA-22 on one bigha and got a paddy production of 22 maunds. I sold per maund paddy at Tk 1,200. My sold profit stands at Tk 16,400."
Another farmer of the same village Razzak Khandakar said, "We want to increase farming of this advance and profitable paddy if adequate seeds are provided by BADC. We can get 3-4 crops from the same land. With increasing production, our income will increase."
Scientific Officer Sourab Adhikari of the BINA Gopalganj Sub-Centre said, farmers are benefitting as they get 20-22 maunds yielding per bigha. Besides, he added, consumers are getting fine rice at less price in markets.
