Some students of Dhaka University (DU) expressed anger and strong
criticism when they found city corporation workers tried to repaint a
stained image of Sheikh Hasina early Sunday.
The incident occurred around 3AM on a metro rail pillar behind the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
Witnesses
said some workers of city corporation, aided by a crane, started
repainting of Sheikh Hasina's image at an early hours on metro rail near
TSC. When students approached there and barred them, the workers
stopped their work.
They claimed they were employed by the metro rail authorities.
The students said that Sheikh Hasina's graffiti was basically a hate pillar. It is a memory of the July Revolution. When we saw it and called the proctor, the proctor came and said that the intelligence agency had called him to remove the pictures of Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina. Later, when the proctor informed the estate office, the office took the initiative to remove it through the city corporation and metro authorities. However, they failed due to the students' objections.
Then the students started protest.
DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed went to the scene to address the agitated crowd.
He said to the students: 'The directive didn't come from any particular ministry but from 'probably' an additional director of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) who told me by phone about the repainting."
This explanation failed to appease the students, who criticised the administration for acting without consulting them.
