Workers of Lovello Ice Cream Factory Mymensingh's in Bhaluka protested by blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Sunday, demanding unpaid wages.
They blocked the highway in Beherabari area of the upazila for about an hour in the morning, causing long traffic jams on both sides of the highway.
A worker named Ainul said, 'There are more than 500 workers in the factory. The salary is fixed at Tk 7,000 per month. But the factory owner has not been paying the salary for two months. Besides, since last year, night bill along with overtime pay has not been paid. Eid bonus has not been received either. So at 8 am, the factory workers protested in front of the factory and later by blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.'
Another worker named Abdus Salam said, 'I have to run my family with the salary I earn. But I have two months' salary outstanding. In this situation, I am struggling to survive. I am demanding payment of my salary."
However, attempts were made to contact the factory authorities to inquire about this matter, but it was not possible.
Bhaluka Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Humayun Kabir said on information, police came and talked to the workers. They left the highway around 11 am with the assurance that efforts will be made to pay the workers' salaries by talking to the factory authorities.
