Man beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Faridpur

A man was reportedly beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Gerda village under Faridpur Sadar upazila early Sunday.

The deceased was Md Millat Chowdhury, 31, son of late Abdul Alim of Gerda village.

According to member of Gerda Union Parishad Parvej Mia, Millat is known for his drug addiction. On Saturday night, Millat went to a house with an intention to thief. However, owners of the house spotted Millat through CCTV cameras, which were installed around the house.

Initially, the family members chased Millat and caught him and later, around 50-60 locals gathered and beat him, leaving Millat dead on the spot.

Md Asadujjaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Faridpur Sadar Police Station, acknowledged the matter and said the man was beaten to death on suspicion of theft. Police recovered the body and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

The official said there are three cases filed against the Millat under the Narcotics Act and two under the theft. He, however, said no complaint has been filed and no detentions have been made in connection with murder.
