Three school students drowned in the Brahmaputra River in Jamalpur on Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place around 3 PM in Shanakanda area near the district town.
The victims were identified as Rahi, 15, son of Ejaz, and Roshan, 15, son of Raja Mia, both 10th-grade students of Jamalpur Zilla School. The third victim, Afif Ahmed, 15, a 9th-grade student at Mohammadpur Preparatory School and College, was visiting his grandparents in Jamalpur from Dhaka.
According to locals, the three students, along with a few others, went to bathe in the river near their homes. Unaware of the depth and unable to swim, they ventured into the water and drowned. The area was particularly hazardous due to deep pits caused by dredging operations.
Roshan's uncle, Shawkat Zaman, explained that the boys assumed the water was shallow, mistaking the area for a safe spot. However, the dredged sections made the river unexpectedly deep, resulting in the tragic incident.
The Fire Service promptly responded to the scene and recovered the bodies, confirmed Siddique, the captain of the Fire Service team, adding that the bodies were being handed over to their families.
Jamalpur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jannat Shahid Pinky, expressed deep condolences to the families and announced the formation of an investigation committee to look into the incident. She assured that measures would be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
