11 killed, 29 injured in road mishaps in 9 districts

A total of 11 people were killed and at least 29 others injured in separate road accidents in nine districts - Rangpur, Jamalpur, Habiganj, Gopalganj, Gaibandha, Gazipur, Dinajpur, Bogura and Cox's Bazar.

RANGPUR: A school teacher was killed and three others were injured in a road accident involving a night coach and an auto-rickshaw in Gangachara Upazila of the district on Saturday night. 

The accident occurred in Moulvibazar area of the upazila at around 8 pm.
  
The deceased was identified as Dilip Mahanta, 52, a resident of Babupara Village under Kolkond Union in the upazila. He served as an assistant teacher at Kolkond Government Primary School. 

Meanwhile, the identities of the injured persons are yet to be ascertained.  

According to Fire Service sources, a battery-powered auto-rickshaw carrying three passengers was going towards Gangachara Bazaar from Rangpur City. Simultaneously, a night coach heading to Dhaka collided with the auto-rickshaw in Moulvibazar area.

The impact caused Dilip to be thrown directly in front of the bus's rear wheels, which left him dead on the spot.
 
The auto-rickshaw driver and two other passengers sustained severe injuries. Locals rushed them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Being informed, police recovered the body of the deceased.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gangachara Model Police Station (PS) Al Emran confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

JAMALPUR: A man was killed and his wife injured in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.
The accident occurred on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway in Maheshpur Kalibari area under the upazila in the evening.
The deceased's wife is undergoing treatment at a hospital with serious injuries.

Deceased Raju Ahmed was a teacher at Jamalpur Government Zaheda Safir Women's College after being recommended by the 40th BCS Education Cadre. The injured wife Sadia Akter is working as an assistant teacher at Beltia Government Primary School in Jamalpur Municipality.

According to local sources, Raju Ahmed left his house for a ride on a motorcycle along with his wife in the afternoon. His wife Sadia Akter fell from the back seat of his motorcycle while returning home on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh road in the evening. While looking back, he lost control over the vehicle and collided with a roadside electric pillar, causing severe head injuries.

Later on, locals rescued the two and took them to a private hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Raju Ahmed dead.

HABIGANJ: A man was killed and three others were injured in a road accident in Kalardoba area under Baniachang Upazila of the district on Saturday. 

The deceased was identified as Jony Mia, 26, son of Sahid Mia, hailed from Netrakona District.

It was known that the accident occurred at around 1 pm when a CNG-run auto-rickshaw collided head-on with another one, which left four passengers of both vehicles injured. 

Then, the injured were rescued by locals and taken to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, where Jony succumbed to his injuries.
Habiganj Sadar PS OC Alamgir Kabir confirmed the incident.

GOPALGANJ: A minor child was killed after being rammed by a speedy bus in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Achia Khatun, 5, daughter of Alamgir Sheikh and a resident of Charghobra Village in the upazila.

According to local and the deceased's family members, a bus of 'Ena Transport' ran over the child when she was crossing the Dhaka-Khulna highway in front of her house, which left her critically injured.

Locals then rescued her and took to Gopalganj General Hospital, where the on-duty physicians declared the girl dead.
Being informed, police recovered the body.

Kashiani Bhatiapara Highway Police Outpost OC Abul Hasem Majumder confirmed the incident, adding that the body will be handed over to the deceased's family members upon completing legal procedures.

GAIBANDHA: A motorcycle rider was killed after being hit by a covered van in Pantapara area on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway under Gobindaganj Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, son of Alkad Hossain, a resident of Chandrahata Village under Kaliganj Upazila in Lalmonirhat District. 

The accident took place when a covered van hit a motorbike in the area at noon, which left its rider Anwar dead on the spot, said Gobindaganj Highway PS OC Mozaffar Hossain.

Anwar Hossain was going to Bogura, the OC said, adding that police detained the killer covered van but its driver managed to flee the scene.

GAZIPUR: A student of Kabi Nazrul College was killed and another injured after a truck hit their motorcycle in Targacha area of the district on Saturday morning. 

The deceased was identified as Md Asif Adnan, 20, son of Ami Sharif, hailed from Laxmipur District. He used to live in a rented house along with his parents in the area.

Md Ataur Rahman, a friend of the deceased, said that a speedy truck hit their motorcycle at Targacha while they were on their way to visit the area, which left them critically injured.
 
"On information, we rushed there and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the on-duty doctors declared Asif dead," Ataur added. 

Injured Hasan is currently receiving treatment at the DMCH. 

Md Faruque, in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the matter.

CHIRIRBANDAR, DINAJPUR: At least 20 people were injured when a passenger bus lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch in Chirirbandar Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The accident occurred on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway near Satayshjan Bridge in Champatali Bazaar area of the upazila at around 12 pm. 

According to local sources, a bus of 'Shamim Enterprise', travelling from Thakurgaon to Rangpur, veered off the road and fell into a roadside ditch after the driver lost control over the steering in the area at noon, which left 20 passengers of the bus critically injured.

Among the injured, two were identified as Sabina Yasmin, 35, wife of Ainul Islam, and Aleya Khatun, 36, wife of Mostafa Kamal, both residents of Bhulli in Thakurgaon District while the identities of other injured passengers are yet to be confirmed. 
 
On information, police from Dashmail Highway PS and firefighters from Sayedpur Fire Service Station rushed there and rescued the injured with the help of locals. The injured were transported to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital and Sayeddpur General Hospital for treatment.  

Confirming the incident, Dashmail Highway PS OC Md Omar Faruk said that authorities are investigating the cause behind the accident and the scene has since been cleared to resume traffic flow.

BOGURA: At least four people including father and his daughter were killed in separate accidents in the district on Saturday morning.

In Kahalu Upazila, Md Faruk Akhand, 30, a resident of Norhotta, and his 7-year-old daughter Humaira, and driver of three-wheeler Md Shahinur Rahman, 50, were killed when a Naogaon-bound truck hit their three-wheeler from behind in Dargahar area at around 10 am.

Kahalu PS OC Shahinuzzaman Shahi said that being informed, Fire Service member reached the scene and rescued the injured and sent the bodies of the deceased to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies.

In Gabtali Upazila, a woman, named Reshmi Khatun, wife of Jubair Hossain of Baliagighi of Kalaghat area, died after a truck crashed her on a road in Sukhanpukur area at around 10 am.

Gabtali PS OC Ashik Iqbal said that Reshmi fell down from the motorcycle accidentally and a sand-laden truck crashed her, leaving her dead on the spot.

UKHIYA, COX'S BAZAR: A college student was killed in a road accident on the Teknaf-Cox's Bazar Marine Drive in Ukhiya Upazila of the district on Saturday.

Sajid Kabir, 19, a college student, tragically lost his life in a road accident on the Teknaf-Cox's Bazar Marine Drive in Ukhiya in the morning.  

Deceased Sajid Kabir was a resident of Nayapara Village in Teknaf and son of Kabir Ahmed. He was a former student of Cox's Bazar Government High School and an SSC graduate of 2024. He was currently pursuing his education at Milestone College in Dhaka. 
 
According to locals, the accident occurred at around 11 am near the Inani Marine Drive road adjacent to the beach when Sajid's motorcycle crashed, resulting in his immediate death at the scene. Another passenger riding with him sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. 
 
Police sources confirmed the death, adding that the body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
