Postgraduate trainee doctors vacated Shahbagh intersection late Sunday night after an 11-hour long protest demanding an increase in their stipend.
At around 10 PM, they announced a temporary halt to their demonstration and revealed plans for further action.
The protest, which began at 11 AM, brought traffic to a standstill in Shahbagh, one of Dhaka's busiest areas.
President of the Doctors' Movement for Justice Society Dr. Jabir Hossain confirmed the end of the day's protest around 10:30 PM. "We have decided to suspend today’s program. Tomorrow, we will present our demands to Health Advisor Noorjahan Begum at the Chief Advisor's residence at 11 AM," he said.
Dr. Jabir expressed optimism, stating, "We believe our Health Advisor is a wise and empathetic leader who will understand our struggles. We are hopeful that she will address our concerns effectively."
Earlier in the evening, Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, joined the protesters to offer support. He assured them of the government's plan to increase stipends to BDT 35,000 starting in July and urged the doctors to assist the nation during this critical period. However, the doctors rejected the proposal, insisting on immediate implementation of the raise and vowing to continue their movement.
Tomorrow's meeting with the Health Advisor will determine the next course of action for the protesting doctors.
