Religious Affairs Adviser to the interim government AFM Khalid Hossain on Monday stated that all incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh have been politically motivated rather than driven by religious extremism.

He made this remark on Monday during a meeting with mosque-based education program teachers, khatibs, Imams, and muezzins at Islamic Foundation auditorium in Patuakhali.
He emphasized, "The international community has expressed concerns over communal harmony in Bangladesh. However, the incidents of violence against minorities here have never stemmed from religious extremism but from political motives. Following certain political upheavals, some disgruntled individuals have been involved in these acts."

Dr. Hossain further elaborated that after the incidents on August 5, 93 cases were filed in connection with violence against minorities and 72 individuals have already been arrested. He assured that strict legal action would be taken against all perpetrators to ensure exemplary punishment. He reiterated the government's commitment to protecting the religious freedoms of all citizens and holding accountable anyone who attempts to undermine these rights.

He also criticized the misinformation about Bangladesh propagated internationally, pointing out that other countries face their own issues with minority rights violations. "While they criticize us, their own religious sites reveal signs of historical suppression," he remarked.

Dr. Hossain also discussed ongoing initiatives to improve the welfare of religious leaders. "Imams, muezzins, and khatibs play an essential role in shaping society. If they are not well-supported, societal harmony cannot be maintained. To this end, we are working on a structured salary system and the provision of two festival bonuses. Additionally, a policy is being developed for mosque management," he stated.

The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Director of the District Islamic Foundation Asma Akter, and attended by notable officials, including the Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin and Superintendent of Police Md. Anwar Zahid. Over 200 imams and muezzins from local mosques were also present at the event.
