Sudden fall in potato price puts growers in tension at Patgram

PATGRAM, LALMONIRHAT, Dec 30:  A sudden fall in advance potato price has put growers in tension in Patgram Upazila of the district, mostly due to higher foreign potato supply in local markets.

This season, the potato farming has been increased in the upazila, as growers got profit -making yielding in the previous year. 

The current potato price is not giving them expected profits because of increased farming costs. At present, growers are selling per kilogram (kg) advance potato at Tk 35-40.

A grower at Kuchlibari Union in the upazila Azizar Rahman, 60, said, "According to advice from Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdul Gaffar, I applied medicine and pesticide in my lands; no disease appeared in potato fields.

Due to potato coming from abroad,the local potato price is decreasing day by day, he added. "We are not getting much profits," he further said.

Grower Hasanujjaman, 30, said, "We have lifted some advance potatoes; but yielding has been less due to bad seed; now per decimal yielding is one maund. Per kg is selling a Tk 40."

"Potatoes didn't come from abroad at need, but now it is coming when we are lifting our advance potatoes. So, we are getting less price," he added.

Patgram Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Abdul Gaffar said, "Farmers are shifting to advance potato farming; compared to past years, the potato cultivation has been higher this year; it is expected good yielding as the weather still goes fair; our sub-assistant agriculture officers are providing advice among growers at the field level."
