A man was reportedly beaten to death on suspicion of theft in Gerda Village under Sadar Upazila of Faridpur on Sunday.
Deceased Md Millat Chowdhury, 31, was the son of late Abdul Alim of area.
Gerda Union Parishad Member Parvej Mia said that Millat is known for his drug addiction. He went to a house in the area at early hours with an intention to steal valuables. However, owners of the house spotted Millat through CCTV cameras, which were installed around the house.
Initially, the family members chased Millat and caught him, and later, around 50 to 60 locals gathered and beat him, leaving Millat dead on the spot.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Officer-in-Charge of Faridpur Sadar Police Station Md Asadujjaman confirmed the incident, adding that there are three cases under the Narcotics Control Act and two more for theft were filed against Millat.
