RAJSHAHI, Dec 31: An entrepreneur of Vietnamese coconut cultivation in Mohanpur area in the city suffered setback, incurring a loss of Tk 22 lakh.

His coconut orchard was supposed to start giving fruits in three years. But after seven years, most of trees didn't give fruits.

He raised the coconut farm with 189 saplings at about Tk 22 lakh.

Entrepreneur Bazlul Haq cut down 124 trees of the garden on Dec 8. Not only that the yielding of the limited trees is very poor, he added.

A recent visit found one Safiqul Islam axing the cut trees for cooking fuel items. Locals were also seen taking cut trees for using as fuel.

His son Atatur Rahman said, the remaining 56 trees will be cut any time. In December, 2017, the saplings were purchased per piece at Tk 500 from Rajshahi Horticulture Centre to raise the orchard.

These were planted in three bighas of land. After few days of planting, 30 saplings died. Later on, another 30 saplings were purchased at the same rate and these were planted.

Then the entrepreneur was told by the horticulture centre that within three years these will give fruits.
Atatur claimed, "There were other species of coconuts of the saplings which were given from the horticulture centre."
Now grass will be farmed in these lands for cattle, he added.

Chief Scientific Officer of the Rajshahi Fruit Research Centre Dr Sujit Kumar Biswas said, "We heard in different times some trees yielded. But, in most areas, these did not yield. Farmers became frustrated  for not getting expected yielding."
