Muggers snatched Tk 7,000 from a cleaner of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) after stabbing him in Basabo area of the capital early Tuesday.

The victim, Waddadi Shivai, a resident of Basabo, was attacked while returning home around 3:30am.

According to his family members, a group of muggers intercepted him and demanded money. When Shivai resisted, they stabbed him in the hand with a sharp weapon before fleeing with the cash.

Shivai was rushed to Mugdah General Hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.    —UNB

Speaking to the media, he expressed concern about the growing lawlessness in the area, citing the incident as a reflection of broader safety concerns in the city.

This attack highlights a troubling surge in mugging incidents across Dhaka. Over the past 45 days, at least 36 cases of mugging have been reported, raising alarm among residents.

Public confidence in security measures appears to be waning, with many criticising law enforcement for being reactive rather than proactive.

Experts and residents alike attribute the spike in crimes to several factors, including the rising cost of living and inadequate policing.

In response, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner recently announced a citywide crackdown on muggers to address the escalating law and order situation.

Community leaders have called for enhanced vigilance and greater cooperation between citizens and law enforcement to curb these incidents.

Meanwhile, the public remains wary, with many urging the authorities to ensure their safety.
