Leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) and National Citizens Committee (NCC) on Tuesday claimed that there will be no national election before the trial of fascist Sheikh Hasina and her accomplices who orchestrated brutal killings of over 2,000 people and scores of injured during the July Uprising.

They demanded the interim government must be given adequate time to bring some major state reforms, slamming BNP for hurrying up for elections before the reforms.

The student leaders warned this at the March for Unity programme at the Central Shaheed Minar in the afternoon.
They also demanded banning Awami League while ADSM Convener Hasnat Abdullah said AL is the sole enemy now.

Earlier, the ADSM and NCC planned to unveil the Proclamation of July to cement the spirit of July Uprising on December 31. Later as the government said it would present the proclamation, the student leaders replaced the proclamation unveiling event with the March for Unity.

Following the ADSM's announcement for the proclamation unveiling event, press wing of the interim government on Monday night announced that the interim government took an initiative to prepare a proclamation of the July uprising based on national consensus.

This proclamation will be adopted to consolidate the unity of the people, the anti-fascist consciousness and the desire for state reform that was built through the July uprising, according to a statement issued by the chief adviser's press wing.
However, speaking at the March for Unity, student leaders welcomed the government's step but demanded it is done within January 15.

Thousands of students and people of all stages across the country began to gather at the Shaheed Minar at midday whereas the main programme started at 3:00pm.

NCC chief organiser and also July Shaheed Smrity Foundation General Secretary Md Sarjis Alam said, "We demand justice for the July Genocide from the government. We want the stolen money returned, we demand control over commodity prices, and we want proper medical treatment for the injured fighters."

He said, "We call on the government to ensure that our country maintains friendly relations with all countries. But if anyone tries to climb on our heads in this process, we must throw them off."

"We found the Chhatra Shibir activists directly or indirectly. They played the role of co-fighter during the movement. They played a very important role giving us advice and stay on the street during the movement. We worked together and made plans sitting across the table," Sarjis said, adding, "We want to state it clearly that truth can never be kept hidden. Revealing the truth is just a matter of time."

Meanwhile, a convoy of the ADSM members travelling from Khulna to Dhaka, was attacked in Bagerhat's Madrasaghata area, near Gopalganj.

It is alleged that local miscreants threw bricks and stones at the vehicles and physically assaulted several students. When the students resisted, clashes erupted, lasting for an hour, leaving 20 injured.

Students accused locals of aiding the attackers and claimed the police remained silent despite being nearby. Khulna coordinator Zahurul Tanveer condemned the attack, attributing it to associates of the 'fascist government.'

Regarding the attack, Sarjis said, "How is it that our comrades are being attacked in Gopalganj? What is the administration doing? If someone is sitting in the Secretariat and trying to conspire, that conspiracy must be uprooted completely."

ADSM Convener Hasnat Abdullah said, "We have no enemies anymore, the only enemy is the Awami League."

Hasnat said, "The law and order situation has still not returned to normal. The interim government has failed to control commodity prices. The adviser says the syndicate has moved from one hand to another, so what is he doing?"

"Before the July Proclamation is issued, we will go to the neighbourhood and listen to what the people have to say. On August 3, we made a one-point declaration from this Shaheed Minar. Many couldn't accept this uprising. That's why the police and some in the Secretariat are conspiring against us. I tell you, accept the reality. Killer Hasina will not be rehabilitated in this country. We have sent her across the border," Hasnat said.

At that time, the participants chanted various slogans such as 'Delhi Na Dhaka - Dhaka, Dhaka' (Delhi or Dhaka--Dhaka, Dhaka), 'Ei Muhurte Dorkar - Bichar ar Songskar' (Need of the time-- Justice and Reforms).

NCC Convener Nasiruddin Patwary said, "Bangladesh has been reborn in 2024. We do not want to see any submissive foreign policy anymore. No country should threaten our sovereignty."

"Today, we stand at a historic juncture. The independence we earned through the blood of the injured and the martyred, we wanted to record that in a declaration. The government decided to discuss this with all political parties in the country. If the sacrifices of the injured and the martyrs are not mentioned in that declaration, the people will not accept it," Nasir said.

He added, "Parents of martyrs are present here today. Their children were killed. We want to warn the government-if you cannot act for justice, the students and the people of this country will take justice into their own hands. The Awami League must go through the process of being banned through justice. We will not leave the streets until the killers, including Sheikh Hasina, are brought to justice. The struggle has begun, and the struggle will continue."

NCC Member Secretary Akhter Hossen said, "The people of this country want a new Bangladesh. They want a new Constitution. They want reforms. When the ADSM leaders announced to unveil July Uprising Proclamation, the interim government also announced that a proclamation would be presented with coordination of all political parties. It's a victory of the ADSM. I want to tell the interim government, the Proclamation of the July Uprising must be prepared by January 15."

"The new Constitution will be made through the elected representatives in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The upcoming election will be a Constituent Assembly election. Those who will be elected in that election will amend the Constitution. The people of Bangladesh have countless demands, and those who win in the upcoming elections must fulfill those demands," said Akhter.

NCC spokesperson Samantha Shermeen, fathers of Abu Sayeed, Mir Mugdho and Abrar Fahad spoke at the event, among others.
They demanded trial of Hasina, strict action against Indian imperialism and proper treatment and rehabilitation of the injured during the July Uprising.

Jagannath University student Khadizatul Kobra who was in jail for 15 months said, "I was arrested and sent to jail for calling fascist Hasina a fascist. I want justice. I want the Awami League be banned.

ADSM spokesperson Umama Fatema criticised the interim government for delay in preparing the July Proclamation.

"They were too busy to prepare the proclamation. Anyway, we welcome the government's decision to prepare one despite being late," she said, adding, "We don't want any election before the trial of Awami League. We won't let the 2024 Uprising go in vain."

At that time, students were seen waving flags of Bangladesh and Palestine.
