Amid the ongoing political uncertainty over the next general election, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Bangladesh army staff, has categorically said that he would never allow the forces to interfere in politics.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman said: "As the army chief, I will not poke my nose into politics during my stay in office. I will also not allow the army to interfere in politics. It is my firm commitment."
"I believe in mind and soul that politicians are alternative to politicians, not the army," said General Waker-Uz Zaman in an interview to a vernacular daily at the Army Headquarters in Dhaka recently. The interview was published on Wednesday (January 1) .
The army chief said that these have happened in the past and said, "We have taken lessons from the past."
Responding to a query over his cooperation with the interim government, he said the army is extending its all-out cooperation to the interim government according to its desire and it will be continued.
The army will go back to barrack when the interim government will thank the forces saying that police will take over law and order now, he said.
