Two minor sisters drowned in a pond in Chandina Upazila of Cumilla on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Maijkhar Purbo Para Village under the upazila at noon.

The deceased were identified as Samia Akter, 3, and her one-and-a-half-year old sister Hamida Aktar, daughters of Sujan Mia, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver of Maijkhar Purbo Para Village in the upazila.

According to locals and the deceased's family members, the two sisters were playing near the bank of a pond next to their house. At one stage of playing, both of them fell in the pond accidentally.

Sensing the matter, the family members started searching for them and later, found their bodies floating in the pond around noon.

The family members then rescued the girls and rushed them to Chandina Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor pronounced the duo dead.

Officer-in-Charge of Chandina Police Station Md Nazmul Huda confirmed the incident.
