A former Jubo Dal leader was hacked to death on Wednesday while returning to in-law's house from the founding anniversary of Chhatra Dal at Patharghata upazila in Barisal district.
The incident occurred in Gutabacha area of Kalmegah union of the upazila around noon.
Nasir Uddin, 38, son of Md. Shahjahan, was a resident of ward no. 9 in Patharghata municipality. He was a member of the Upazila Jubo Dal.
According to local sources, the incident took place after Nasir attended a series of events organized by the Patharghata Upazila Chhatra Dal to mark the student organization's anniversary. After the event, Nasir was on his way to his in-laws' home in Kalmegah's Gutabacha area. On his way, two assailants, reportedly with a history of personal enmity, brutally hacked Nasir with machetes before fleeing the scene.
Nasir was found severely injured by locals who rushed him to the Patharghata Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The accused men-- Mohammad Hasan, 23, and Rabbir, 25, both residents of the same village-- are alleged by the local BNP to be members of the banned Chhatra League, the student wing of the then ruling party. This claim has raised questions about the possible political motivations behind the murder.
Patharghata Police Station officer-in-charge Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, confirmed that police have visited the crime scene and launched an investigation.
He stated that it is still unclear whether the accused have any political affiliations but investigations are ongoing. The body has been sent to Barisal General Hospital for autopsy and authorities are actively working to arrest the suspects and take legal action against those responsible for the crime.
