VAT though go up, won't impact daily essential prices: Adviser Salehuddin

The decision to hike valued-added tax (VAT) on goods, will not impact in prices of daily essentials, assured Finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed on Thursday.

The adviser made this remarks to reporters responding questions at the secretariat.

"This will not have much impact on the prices of goods. We have made the duty on essential goods zero. You will see the discount. The main weight indicators of inflation are rice, pulses; you know that. The prices of all the goods that go up, are less important in increasing our inflation," he said while responding about VAT on 43 item.
Earlier, it was revealed that the NBR would soon issue a gazette announcing VAT hikes on a range of goods and services -- most likely to comply with IMF bailout terms.
