Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has predicted that several cold waves are likely to sweep across the country after January 10.
Besides, the current cold weather is expected to persist for a few more days, with moderate to dense fog during midnight till noon, it said.
Meanwhile, the northern regions of the country have already been experiencing mild cold waves over the past few days, disrupting normal life.
Omar Faruk, a meteorologist at BMD, said that one to two moderate to severe cold waves and two to three mild cold waves are likely in January.
Chuadanga recorded the lowest temperature in the country at 9.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday morning as a mild cold wave swept through parts of the country.
Besides, dense fog has been seen in various parts of Dhaka since early Thursday morning. The Met office said that the lowest temperature recorded in Dhaka on Thursday (January 2) morning was 13.8 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest this season.
According to the BMD, temperatures between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius indicate a mild cold wave, while 6 to 8 degrees Celsius signify a moderate cold wave and severe cold waves occur when temperatures fall below 6 degrees Celsius.
BMD’s regular weather bulletin also warned that thick fog may temporarily disrupt air navigation, inland river transport, and road communication.
Nighttime temperatures may remain nearly unchanged, while daytime temperatures could drop by 1 to 2 degree Celsius. Dense fog during the day may intensify the cold sensation in some areas.
