Road mishaps claim 10 lives in five districts

A total of 10 people were killed and at least 21 others injured in separate road accidents in five districts - Khagrachhari, Rajshahi, Naogaon, Satkhira and Narayanganj.

KHAGRACHHARI: A motorcyclist was killed and another injured after being hit by a truck in Sadar Upazila of the district on Thursday.

The accident occurred at Alutila on the Khagrachhari-Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Md Firoz, son of Kamal, hailed from Silachhari area in of Lama Upazila of Bandarban.

The injured person is Rakib Razi.

According to police, a cement-laden truck hit a motorcycle carrying two persons in the area in the morning, leaving Firoz dead on the spot and Rakib critically injured.

Being informed, police recovered the body of the deceased.

The injured was rescued and admitted to Khagrachhari Sadar Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khagrachhari Sadar Police Station (PS) Abdul Baten Mridha confirmed the incident.

RAJSHAHI: Three individuals were killed when two motorcycles collided with each other in Mohanpur Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident took place in Kesharhat area on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway under the upazila in the evening.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Quoting locals, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Mohanpur PS Hridoy Kumar Poddar said that two motorcycles were collided head-on in Kesharhat area, which left three people dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and seized the motorcycles, the SI added.

MOHADEVPUR, NAOGAON: Two people were killed and at least 15 others injured when a bus overturned after losing its control over the steering in Mohadevpur Upazila of the district on Wednesday noon.

The accident took place at Khunti intersection on the Mahadevpur-Nazipur regional highway of the upazila at around 12 pm.

The deceased were identified as Mosharraf Hossain, 42, helper of the bus driver and a resident of Pashchim Khapur Village, and Aftab Uddin, 50, a health assistant at Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex.

According to locals, the accident occurred when a bus of 'Tanoy Paribahan' carrying 30 passengers lost control over its steering while trying to avoid a crash with a motorcycle that suddenly entered the highway from a side road. 

The bus veered off the road and overturned into a nearby ditch, which left Mosharraf dead on the spot and at least 16 others injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred Aftab to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) following the deterioration of his condition.

Later on, Aftab succumbed to his injuries on the way to the RMCH.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

Mohadevpur PS OC Hashmat Ali confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

SATKHIRA: An elderly man was killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The accident took place in Trishmail area on the Satkhira-Khulna highway of the upazila at around 11:30 am.

Deceased Amanullah, 60, son of Shariatullah, was a resident of Talatala Village under Labsa Union in the upazila.

Local sources said that Amanullah was travelling towards Satkhira Town when a bus of 'Imad Paribahan', coming from the opposite direction at high speed, collided with his van, which left him dead on the spot.

Satkhira Fire Service Inspector Nurul Islam confirmed the recovery of Amanullah's body. However, the bus driver managed to flee the scene soon after the accident along with his vehicle.

 Necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the Fire Service official added.

RUPGANJ, NARAYANGANJ: Three people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents in Rupganj Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

Two elderly men were killed and three others injured after being hit by a private car in the upazila.

The accidents took place on the Ruposhi-Kanchan road in Hatabo Jelepara area under Bhulta Union of the upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Ram Das, 70, and Ibadullah, 70, residents of Hatabo Atlashpur area in the upazila.

The injured are: Abu Taher, Radhamon and Sarbaswar.

According to local sources, Ram Das and Ibadullah were buying fish from fishermen on the footpath next to the Ruposhi-Kanchan road in Hatabo Jelepara area at around 9 am on Wednesday. At that time, a speedy private car lost control over its steering and ran over Ram Das and Ibadullah. 

The two died on the spot and three more pedestrians were also injured at that time. The injured were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

On the other hand, a young man was killed and two others were injured in another road accident in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Hriday, 27, a resident of Notun Bazar area in the upazila.

The injured are: Munna and Shanto.

It was known that three youths were returning Dhaka from Rupganj at around 7 am riding on a motorcycle. When they reached Jelapara area, their motorcycle collided head-on with a brick-carrying trolley coming from the opposite direction, which left Hridoy dead on the spot and his two pillion riders seriously injured. The injured two were admitted to the DMCH.
