NCCI issues warning against illegal subscription

NATORE, Jan 2: The Natore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has issued a warning to businessmen and shopkeepers in the district, urging them not to pay unauthourised subscription to any individuals or groups.

The announcement was made through public miking on Tuesday afternoon, aiming to alert the business community about fraudulent activities.

The NCCI notice emphasised that if anyone faces pressure to pay such illegal subscriptions, they should immediately contact the local administration or reach out to the chamber for assistance.

The warning came in response to reports that some individuals have been extorting money from shopkeepers and business owners under various pretexts.

NCCI President Abdul Mannaf confirmed the issue, stating, "Some dishonest individuals and groups have been demanding subscriptions in the name of organizing different functions, creating fear among businessmen. This is unacceptable."

He further explained that many businessmen, out of fear or coercion, have already paid these unauthorised subscriptions. "To address the situation, we have taken steps to raise awareness among the business community by informing them through public announcement," Mannaf added.

This notice comes at a time when the NCCI is actively working to revitalise its operations after a 12-year hiatus. During this period, both the general public and business community were largely deprived of the Chamber's services.

Previously, the NCCI had 700 members, but around 600 members left due to unfavourable circumstances. However, a fresh start was initiated with the formation of a new committee comprising 150 members following an election on October 19, 2024.

The new committee has been working to restore the momentum of business and trade in Natore. By addressing issues like illegal subscriptions, the NCCI aims to create a secure and supportive environment for local businesses to thrive.

Business owners have expressed optimism about the Chamber's renewed activities, expecting that such efforts will strengthen the district's commercial landscape and curb illegal practices.
