AG assures of early hearing on Sinha murder case appeal

Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman on Thursday assured the mother of retired army major Sinha Md Rashed Khan, who was shot dead by police in Cox's Bazar in 2020, of taking steps for early hearing on the appeal of the murder case pending before the High Court for disposal.

"We have met with the Attorney General today and urged him to take steps for quick hearing on the appeal of my son murder case as a total of 1067 seven days have already completed since my son killed. But, the legal proceedings of the case is yet to complete despite the lapse of many days," Sinha's mother Nasima Akter said this while taking with reporters at the Supreme Court premises after meeting with the Attorney General on Thursday.

She also said that the Attorney General assured her of taking steps for a quick hearing on the appeal pending before the High Court Division for disposal.

"I hope the extrajudicial killing incident will never take place in Bangladesh again. Being the representative of every mother, I hope this will be the last of such incidents and hoped the appeal hearing will take place very soon. I hope we will get justice in the High Court too," she added.

The death references of Maj (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan murder case have reached the High Court for examining the lower court verdict.

On January 31, a Cox's Bazar court sentenced former officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station Pradeep Kumar Das and former inspector of Baharchhara Police Investigation Centre Liaqat Ali to death, and six other people to life imprisonment for killing Maj (retd) Sinha Md Rashed Khan.

The six lifers are dismissed Sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Rakshit, constables Sagar Deb and Rubel Sharma and police informants Md Nezamuddin, Ruhul Amin and Ayaz Uddin.
On February 8 in 2022, the death reference of the cases reached at the HC.

According to the law, if a convict is sentenced to death in a lower court, all the documents of the case are sent to the High Court for approval of the penalty. It is then included in the branch concerned of the High Court as a death reference case.

Later, when the case 'Paperbook'- file containing all the documents- is prepared, the hearing of the death reference is held following the serial.

On July 31, 2020, Sinha was shot dead at the Shamlapur police check-post in Baharchhara Union of Cox's Bazar while returning to the town after filming for a documentary.
