Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam has been declared the National Poet of Bangladesh officially as the Cultural Affairs Ministry on Thursday issued a notification recognizing him for his contributions.

Earlier on December 5 last year, the Advisory Council led by Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus cleared a proposal in this regards.

According to the notification, issued signed by Cultural Affairs Secretary Md Ataur Rahman, Nazrul Islam would be considered as the National Poet from May 4, 1972, the day he was brought to Bangladesh after the country's independence.

Though the gazette was published on December 24, it was released on Thursday.

Though Nazrul was well known to all as a national poet since the independence of the country, there was no official recognition for the rebel poet from the government. After resuming power on August 8 last, the interim government has taken the initiative to recognize him officially as the National Poet.

On May 4, 1972, the-then government led by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had brought the poet to Bangladesh from Kolkata and allocated a house number 333-B at Dhanmondi's road number old-28 for the poet.

On February 18, 1976, Nazrul Islam was given citizenship, and awarded with the most prestigious 'Ekushey Award' of the country. The rebel poet breathed his last on August 29 in the same year.

In 2018, the previous government has enacted 'Nazrul Institute Act, 2018' mentioning Nazul Islam as the national poet.
