JnU JCD leaders demand dissolution of controversial committee

BCL members inclusion in new JnU JCD committee betrayal to the martyr's blood

Disgruntled leaders and activists of the Jagannath University (JnU) branch of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have alleged that the newly formed convening committee has betrayed dedicated members by appointing individuals from the banned Chhatra League, as well as married individuals and professionals, while ignoring long-standing, dedicated activists.

These allegations were made during a press conference held in front of Jagannath University's main gate on Monday (30 December). The discontented members demanded the immediate dissolution of the controversial committee and the formation of an inclusive, widely acceptable committee that accommodates those who endured past struggles and repression. More than a hundred disgruntled leaders and activists of the JnU JCD were present at the press conference.

In a written statement, Saiful Islam Sabuj, a student of the university's History Department (2008-09 session) and former Joint General Secretary (No. 2) of JnU JCD, stated that proven leaders of the anti-fascist movement were ignored. He alleged that inactive and unqualified individuals, and even former members of the banned Chhatra League, were given positions on the committee. Additionally, leaders and activists from the 2013-14 and 2015-16 sessions were deliberately excluded. Sabuj also accused the committee of appointing professionals, married individuals, and controversial figures while neglecting long-standing dedicated activists.

Sabuj further claimed that including M. Tanvir Rahman, who is allegedly involved in planning and carrying out attacks during the July Revolution, as a convening committee member, constitutes a severe betrayal of the sacrifices made by JCD activists, other student organisations, and general students. While a member secretary from the university's 2009-10 session was appointed, prominent leaders such as the former Joint General Secretaries (No. 1 and No. 2) from the same session, Millat Patwary and Sabuj himself, were intentionally excluded without any justification.

He highlighted additional grievances, such as Nahid Chowdhury, a senior leader from the 2010-11 session and a former Vice President of the JnU JCD, being placed below junior members in the hierarchy. Similarly, Saiful Islam Nibir from the 2012-13 session, who served as Joint General Secretary (No. 2) in the previous committee, was intentionally excluded.

Other former committee members present at the press conference included Joint General Secretary Mahmudul Hasan Ratin, Assistant General Secretary Md. Shahab Uddin, Literature and Publication Secretary Md. Abdus Shukur Aiman, Assistant Organising Secretary Md. Omar Faruk, Assistant Publicity Secretary Mehedi Hasan, and Assistant General Secretary Md. Nazmul Alam. Minhazul Alam, a student of the 2014-15 session, was also present.
