Gas crisis halts cooking in some areas of capital

The 'longstanding gas issues' in Dhaka city have gotten worse, with some areas not getting gas for most of the day. Other areas only see a bit.

The Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company says that a crisis has developed in some areas due to repairs on an LNG Terminal.

Several customers in different parts of the capital say that their Titas Gas line did not supply any gas for most of Thursday.
Residents of Banasree, Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Basabo, and Azimpur have suffered the most issues.

Ram Chandra, who lives near the Abahani Club Field in Dhanmondi, said: "There have been issues since November. You can't cook using the gas line from dawn to at least 3pm."

Residents of the Vasantek rehabilitation project report a similar experience - there is no gas supply throughout most of the day and no adequate gas supply since the start of winter. Residents there are relying on gas cylinders and electric stoves to cook.

Nasrin Shimul, a local housewife, told bdnews24.com that her family has been without gas for three to four months.

"Before this, we used to get a bit of gas late at night and many people would stay up to cook. Now the gas is gone. We are paying monthly gas bills and then buying cylinders!"

Noor Jannat, a resident of the Kalshi area of Mirpur, said, "Earlier, the gas pressure was low during the day. Now, there is no gas from dawn. As a result, the day's cooking has to be finished before dawn."

"Along with the rent, you also have to pay the gas bill. Those who rent houses with gas cylinders are better off."
The situation has become so bad that many homes have to keep extra LPG cylinders on hand even when they already have a gas line.

According to a report by Petrobangla, 2,505 million cubic feet of gas was supplied across the country on Thursday, which is at least 400 million cubic feet lower than any day in the previous week.

A total of 574 million cubic feet of gas was supplied the floating LNG terminal in the sea on Thursday though it has the capacity to supply 1,168 million cubic feet of gas.

Petrobangla has already announced that a terminal in Moheshkhali will be closed for 72 hours - or three days - for repairs.
Shahnewaz Parvez, the managing director of Titas Gas, told bdnews24.com: "Around 1,400 million cubic feet of gas is supplied to the Titas area. Due to the repairs on the terminal, it has dropped by 200 million cubic feet of gas. Due to this, the crisis has intensified in some areas."

"The gas problem in Dhaka has been going on for a long time. In some areas, not enough gas is being supplied to meet the demand. There are also problems with the lines in some areas. As a result, gas cannot be supplied at high pressure. We are trying to repair the lines in each area."
