NATORE, Jan 3: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said that Awami League has no chance of returning to power in the upcoming Bangladesh elections.

Speaking at a member conference organised by the Natore district Jamaat at Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula Government College ground on Friday afternoon, Dr Rahman said some people are questioning whether Awami League will even participate in the elections.

"Those who do not love and respect the people of this country have no election in their fate," he said.

The Jamaat Ameer went on to condemn the past elections, saying that Awami League had held three elections through cruelty, adding, "What elections for those who do not believe in elections?"

He also called on the government to implement urgent reforms and hold free and fair elections, allowing the people to choose their representatives through voting. "The people will elect those they like," he said.

The Jamaat leader further said that political leaders who have held power since the country's independence had betrayed the trust of the people to varying degrees, including Awami League which has caused the most harm to citizens.

He said that Jamaat-e-Islami wants foreign friends, not masters.

Natore district Jamaat Ameer Dr Mir Nurul Islam presided over the meeting, where leaders from various levels, including the party's Central Assistant Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan, spoke.    —UNB
