The state has appealed against the High Court's verdict canceling four extortion cases filed against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

The state has filed a leave-to-appeal against the High Court's judgement related to cancellation of the cases. In the appeal, the state has argued that the High Court's verdict cancelling the extortion cases against Tarique Rahman was not right.

The state's petitions were included in the Supreme Court's cause list on Saturday (January 4) for hearing on Sunday (January 5).

The petitions will be heard by a bench of four justices led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam of the Appellate Division on Sunday (January 5).

On October 23, a High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain had pronounced a verdict cancelling the four cases filed against Tarique Rahman.

The state has filed a leave to appeal against the verdict.

It may be mentioned that being the plaintiffs, different individuals filed four cases against Tarique Rahman on charge of extortion with Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi Police Stations during the time of the military-backed caretaker government in 2007

In a press briefing at the court premises, Tarique Rahman's lawyers, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister Kaiser Kamal, said Tarique Rahman intends to resolve the cases through legal procedures.

He has around 80 cases filed against him, which will be addressed legally.

Barrister Kaiser Kamal, the legal secretary of BNP, said that Tarique Rahman is interested in resolving his cases only after all the political cases filed against the party's leaders and workers are disposed of.
