NETRAKONA, Jan 4: Six activists of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been arrested after they brought out a surprise procession in the district on Friday.
Additional Superintend of Police (ASP) (Special Branch) Md Lutfar Rahman, spokesperson of Netrakona District Police, confirmed the matter.
The arrested are: former vice-president of District BCL Chinmoy Sarker, 27, its assistant sports secretary Sandip Sarker, 25, member Sinda Banik Bishal, 25, Loman Hossain, 28, former information and research secretary of Poura Chhatra League Joy Saha, 25, and its member Rahul Roy, 24.
ASP (Special Branch) Md Lutfar Rahman said that 10 to 15 leaders and workers of the banned organization BCL brought out a surprise procession in the district town early Friday morning. The procession was going toward Shaheed Minar from Teri Bazar.
Receiving information, a patrol team of Netrakona Model Police Station went to the scene. The BCL activists were dispersed and later fled away from there. After examining the video footage and collecting information locally, police arrested six people. Police have also been conducting raids to arrest others.
Md Lutfar Rahman also said that being the members of banned organization, they brought out the procession as part of their conspiracy against the present government and creating anarchy and destroying the communal harmony. Because of it, a case has been filed against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act. After showing them arrested in the case, they were produced before the court on Saturday morning.
Meanwhile, in protest against the BCL's procession, Netrakona Nagorik Committee also brought a procession in the town in the afternoon. The procession starting from the Central Shaheed Minar paraded different roads.
