RAJSHAHI, Jan 4: Despite full season of Aman paddy harvesting and huge imports from India, the rice price is higher in the district.

Aman harvesting started in the beginning of Agrahyan. But now after one and a half months, the rice price is higher in both village and town. In the last one year, prices of different rice were increased by 15 per cent.

According to local market sources, there is no shortage of rice supply in markets.

Through several land ports including Hili, rice is imported daily from India. In the last six days, 16,490 metric tons (mt) rice were imported through Hili Land port by 405 trucks. Through Bhomra Landport in Satkhira  50,161 mt rice were imported from India. After imports of these huge rice, there has been no fall in the rice price.

During visits on Wednesday in different rice warehouses and wholesale rice shops in the city, this information was gathered.
In the last year per 50 kilogram (kg) BR-28 rice bag was sold at Tk 3,000, coarse rice (Guti Swarna) at Tk 2,400 and Jheerashai at Tk 3,200.

But within one year per bag rice price has been increased by Tk 500-600. This year BR-28 rice bags is selling at Tk 3,500 and Guti Swarna at Tk 3,800.

Millers said, at the mill level per bag BR-28 rice bag is selling at Tk 3,250 and 3,350, Guti Sawrna at Tk 2,700-2,800, and Jheerasail at Tk 3,500.

These rice varieties are selling at Tk 200-300 higher per bag at warehouses and wholesalers levels. And at the retail level, these again are selling at Tk 300-500 higher price per bag.

Traders are blaming each other for the price hike. Wholesalers said, millers are increasing prices. Millers said, seasonal traders are raising the rice price. And retail traders blame the wholesalers.

At retail level per kg 28 rice is selling at Tk 72-75, Guti at Tk 63-65 and Jheerashail at Tk 80.

Amit Sarkar, owner of Amit Store in Sagorpara area in the city, said, "We are counting extra money for bringing rice from warehouses. In one month, rice price was hiked two times."

Prakash Prasad, owner of AP Rice Store at Sahebbazar, said, "I am selling rice after taking from mills. For the higher price, mills and middlemen are benefitting."

Solaiman Ali, owner of Sotota Enterprise in Kadirganj area, said, the rice price is increasingly weekly;  the demand of the country cannot be met by importing and marketing locally produced rice.

"We have to purchase at higher price and sell at higher price. If the rice price falls, we can sell at less prices," he added.

Kamal Hossain, owner of Kamal Auto Rice Mill, said, without extra prices, seasonal traders don't sell stocked rice.
"Our mill cost and other costs are increasing. So the rice price is increasing," he added.

Rafiqul Islam, president of Rajshahi Ricemills Owners Association, blamed the higher paddy price  for the rice price. He said, "We are blamed for rice price increase. But now rice processing cost is increasing because of increased paddy price. Rice prices have been increased at the mill level. Along with farmers, seasonal traders stocked paddy. When it is higher price, they market their stock paddy. It is impacting the rice market."

Deputy Director of the Consumers Rights Directorate-Rajshahi Ibrahim Hossain said, "Our campaign is going on to keep rice price in control, Rice traders are warned. They are fined who are not aware."
