PANCHAGARH, Jan. 4: A workshop on 'Formation of adhoc committee for water management team' for the electric block-3 light pump irrigation project of the Water Development Board (WDB) was held at Telipara in Debiganj Upazila of the district on Saturday.
Deputy chief extension office of the WDB-Thakurgaon organized the workshop under 'Climate Smart Agriculture and Water Management Project'. It was arranged in the project area.
Chief Extension Officer of the WDB-Rangpur Amlesh Chandra Roy, Executive Engineer of the WDB-Panchagarh Ashutosh Barman, Deputy Director of the DAE Abdul Matin, Development Consultant Matiur Rahman, Deputy Chief Extension Officer of the WBD-Thakurgaon Rafiul Bari, Debiganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Naeem Morshed, and Agricultural Extension Officers CF Abdul Muttalib and Alfaz Ahmed were present, among others at the workshop.
Over the workshop, a five-member adhoc committee was formed for the project, with Tapan Kumar Roy as its convener.
Deputy Chief Extension Officer of the WBD-Thakurgaon Rafiul Bari said, the WDB built the project in 1963; at that time, the project was taken up to increase the irrigation facilities by lifting water from the Karatoya River through electric pump to facilitaste farmers during the Kharif-1, Kharif-2 and Rabi seasons; due to lack of regular renovation work, only one kilometre (km) of the irrigation canal out of 9km was used to provide irrigation facilities.
In the current fiscal year, the renovation work of the remaining 8km of irrigation canal began. If the entire irrigation canal of the roject is renovated, 1,530 hectares of land included in the project in that area will come under irrigation facilities, he added.
