Farmers busy cultivating winter crops at Jaldhaka

JALDHAKA, NILPHAMARI, Jan 4: Farmers in Jaldhaka Upazila of the district  are passing busy time cultivating winter crops including vegetables mostly.

Cabbage, cauliflower, radish, red spinach, green spinach, tomato, carrot, bottle gourd, and bean are being farmed in the upazila. 

Already, vegetables are being sold in local markets every day.

A visit found growers passing busy time in taking care of their fields- weeding, lifting, irrigating and fertiliser applying.

Farmer Alam along the Boro Teesta River at Dawabari Union said, "I have cultivated groundnut on 10 decimals, cauliflower and green spinach, onion and garlic on 20 decimals, cabbage on 15 decimals, and coriander on 5 decimals."

A farmer of Gabrul Hajipara area at Koimari Union Mujubur Rahman said, "I am used to cultivate coriander, bean, bottle gourd, brinjal, radish, red spinach, onion, garlic and mustard yearly."

A farmer in Nijpara area at Mirganj Union Sirajul Islam said, two species of mustard have been cultivated; plants of one species of these is small. "We hope yielding will be good," he added.

According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, this season, 1,500 hectares (ha) of land have been brought under maize cultivation, 9,000 ha under   two species of mustard, 400 ha under groundnut, 2,800 ha under garlic and 3,500 ha under onion cultivation in the upazila.

Besides, black cumin farming has been targeted on 500 ha, coriander on 800 ha, and different vegetables on 1,300 ha.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Suman Ahmed said, "Our field level officials are keeping contact with farmers, holding field meeting and giving advice."

Across vast areas in the upazila, Rabi crops, such as mustard, onion, coriander, black cumin, and ground nut are cultivated, he added.     

He further said, if the weather goes fair, the production target will be achieved.
