A newly-wed woman was strangled to death by her husband in Nilphamari's Syedpur upazila on Sunday.
The incident took place at night at Kazipara in the town.
Police recovered the body of the victim Mukta Akter and arrested her husband Rana, son of the late Bablu Mia of the area.
Locals said that Rana got married to Mukta, daughter of Nannu from Kundal Paschim Para village of the upazila, 16 days ago. Marital strife began right after marriage between them. Following this, Rana strangled Mukta Akter to death at night.
The victim Mukta's mother Zaheda Begum alleged, 'Rana married my daughter Mukta by keeping the information about his first marriage secret. Rana and his family members tortured my daughter from the fifth day after the marriage. My daughter was also physically tortured last Saturday night. They killed her in a planned manner. I want justice for the murder of my daughter.'
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Syedpur Police Station Faim Uddin said that the young man has been arrested on charges of strangling his wife. During initial interrogation, he confessed of killing.
Legal action will be taken later if the family of the deceased files a case, the OC said.
