Two leaders of banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) have been placed on one day remand each in a case filed on charges of attempting to murder a Dhaka University (DU) student during the anti-discrimination students’ movement on July 15.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Haque passed the order on Sunday as police produced the duo before the court and pleaded for a 10-day remand each.

The accused are-- Kamal Uddin Rana, joint general secretary of BCL central committee, and president of its Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall unit, and Abdullah Khan Shaishab, Surja Sen Hall unit organizing secretary.
On Saturday night, police in separate drives arrested Rana and Shaishab from Dhaka.

According to the police, on July 15, 2024, DU students brought out a procession in support of the anti-discrimination students’ movement from in front of the Raju sculpture on the campus in the afternoon.

At one stage, leaders and activists of various affiliated organisations of the Awami League (AL), including the banned BCL, attacked the students with local and foreign-made weapons, leaving around 300 students seriously injured.

On October 28, a DU student named Arman Hossain, who was injured in the attack, filed the case against 220 people, including BCL president Saddam Hossain.

Meanwhile, early Saturday, police arrested Sajibur Rahman Sajib, former president of banned Chhatra League of Bijoy Ekattor Hall of Dhaka University,  from Zafrabad area under Hajaribagh Thana in a case filed with Shahbagh police station.

Sajib is the accused number 14 of the case filed on charge of attack on the supporters of anti-discrimination students’ movement on Dhaka University campus on July 15.

Later in the day, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Ishrat Jenifar Jerin instructed police to interrogate Sajib at jail gate in connection with the case.
