Expatriate gets life-term in drugs case

A special court in Dhaka sentenced an expatriate to life term imprisonment in a case filed over his attempt to smuggle 15,050 Yaba tablets to the Saudi Arabia in 2023.

The convict man is Anik.

Arunava Chakrabarti, judge of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2, handed down the verdict in presence of the convict. He was also fined Tk five lakh, in default, he has to suffer two more years in jail. 

According to the case documents, Anik was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on January 16, 2023, before he could board a plane for Dammam, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Security officials seized 15,050 Yaba tablets from his bag.

The following day, Inspector Azadul Islam Salam of the Department of Narcotics Control filed the case with the Airport Police Station.
