Six police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were withdrawn and attached to Kurigram Police Lines following an incident where two drug suspects were forcibly taken from a police vehicle in Kurigram's Bhurungamari upazila.
Meanwhile, two individuals allegedly involved in the incident have also been arrested.
Based on a tip-off, Bhurungamari police conducted a raid at Hafizul Islam's residence at Baburhat bazaar area in Char Bhurungamari union on Sunday. During the operation, 1,620 yaba tablets were seized and Hafizul Islam and his wife, Hasina Akhter, were arrested.
As the suspects were being transported to the police station, a group of about 100 individuals, reportedly led by Hafizul's elder brother Ashraful and a man claiming to be a journalist, intercepted the police vehicle near Arazi Paikdanga village. The group managed to overpower the officers and free the handcuffed suspects.
Following the incident, a joint team of police conducted raids and arrested Anwar Hossain alias Arif, 32, and his father Abdus Salam, 50, from Huchar Bala village. Later, on Monday, another joint operation led to the detention of three more individuals from Arazi Paikdanga for questioning
Due to negligence in duty, SI Arif Mahmud Apel, ASI Alomgir Hossain, and constables Sabuj Chandra Roy, Binoy Chandra Barman, Shafiullah and Mizanur Rahman were withdrawn from their posts and attached to Kurigram Police Lines.
Bhurungamari Police Station officer-in-charge Munirul Islam confirmed the incident, stating, "Two suspects have been sent to jail, and three others are being questioned. Efforts are underway to apprehend all individuals involved in the incident."
Masud Rana, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police for Bhurungamari Circle, said, "The suspects were taken from police custody during an operation involving 1,620 yaba tablets. Six officers have been withdrawn due to their negligence, and a thorough investigation is ongoing."
