KAMALNAGAR, LAXMIPUR, Jan 6: A wooden bridge over the Bhulua River at the end of Motahar Hossain Road at Ward No. 7 of Charkadira Union in Kamalnagar Upazila of the district has been risky for a long time, which causes  immense public sufferings.

Thousands of people including school and college students, children and old men are suffering communication problem. They demanded a bridge in place of it.

About 10 years back, the wooden bridge was built at the initiative of former chairman of Charkadira Union Mawlana Khaled Saifullah to reduce public sufferings. There is an Ashrayan of over 400 families in the east of the bridge, and beside there is a mass graveyard.

Besides, after losing homes due to erosion by the Meghna River, about 600 families have raised houses in the bridge area.

People of Charkadira, Chartika, Bottoli and other villages use the bridge for going to upazila Sadar. It is also used by students of Fazumiarhat High School, Shantirhat Government Primary School, Hajirhat Upakul Government College,  Charjangalia SSC High School and others.

Businessmen and farmers are also facing troubles in carrying goods over the bridge.  Patients are taken to upazila and district hospitals by rounding extra several kilometres.

Locals Shah Alam Maji, Ismail and Abduzzaher said, earlier they would use boat to pass the river before raising the wooden bridge. Now our suffering knows no bound. They demand a concrete bridge there immediately.

A local, Abul Kashem said, "Many leaders came and went, giving promises only. But our dreamed bridge was not built. I will be happy if I see a bridge there before dying."

A local trader, Bellal Hossain said, "Many gave us assurance before. But after elections, none came to see. The new bridge dream remains a dream."

Acting Chairman of Charkadira Union Harunur Rashid said, "At present, it has been urgent to build a permanent bridge there. We proposed this at the upazila development meeting for several times."

Upazila LGED Engineer Sohel Anwar said, after field level inquiry, a proposal will be sent to the authorities concerned.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Suchitra Ranjan Das said, the upazila engineer has been asked for feasibility study for that bridge.

"I hope the problem will be solved," the UNO added.
